Rick L. Johnson developed a love for both sports and writing long before publishing biographies about professional athletes Jim Abbott, Bo Jackson, and Magic Johnson.
“From the time I put on a baseball mitt I’ve enjoyed athletics, both as a participant and a fan,” Johnson said. “Also, for a fifth grade writing assignment I described a favorite family chair, and I think at that point I knew I wanted to be a writer.”
His two interests led him to begin a journalism career with a focus on sports writing.
Johnson’s articles have appeared in Kansas Sports, Highlights for Children, Woman’s World, and many other state and national publications. In 1995 he was featured in Something about the Author.
“Obviously I like to write about sports, but Student Profile Services is open to providing stories about any extracurricular activities,” Johnson said. “I think it is important for young people to find a niche, and that can be in a lot of areas.”
Johnson hopes the profiles give readers a glimpse of the personality and accomplishments of the student. “Also,” he added, “the stories are another form of applause for the positive activities of young people.”
