Not often is an all-American athlete equally well known by another title, but that’s the case for Cloud County Community College distance runner Kyle Doperalski, the “Voice of the Thunderbirds.”
Throughout the indoor track season, which starts in January, Doperalski continued his broadcasts of T-bird basketball home and road games on the student radio station, KVCO. Concordia area listeners praised his enthusiasm and his sports knowledge, and often asked, “How does he do it all?”
“You have to get as much sleep as possible and keep up your nutrition,” Doperalski says. A product of Wamego’s outstanding cross country program, he credits a rugged, college-level training regimen with helping him make great strides during his two years at CCCC.
In March, at the national junior college indoor meet, Doperalski ran 5,000 meters in 15:12. He placed third, and as the first United States runner to cross the finish line he received first-team all-American honors. In April at the Texas Relays he set a school 10,000-meter record of 32:07.
Oh, by the way, during the fall semester Doperalski was a 4.0 student, and a cross country all-American. He has an academic scholarship from Nebraska and should immediately help the Husker’s cross country team. Doperalski, though, will have mixed feelings when he moves on to the Big 12. There’s some emotion in the “Voice of the Thunderbirds” when he says, “I’ve loved my time here at Cloud.” —Story by www.studentprofileservices.com May 2002
